Peanut butter, the paste of ground roasted peanuts popular in many countries and has many health benefits if eaten in moderation (limit your peanut butter intake to one serving per day/ 0ne or two tablespoons).

Benefits of Peanut Butter

Peanuts and peanut butter contain nutrients that may boost a person’s health.

  • Full of healthy fat: the fat in peanut butter is the good fat your body needs. According to the USDA, two tablespoons of smooth peanut butter contains 15 grams of fat which half of it made up of oleic acid, a healthy type of monounsaturated fat.
  • High in fiber: Peanut butter is a good source of fiber; 2 tablespoons of peanut butter contain 2 grams of fiber that helps to keep our digestive systems healthy.
  • Rich in protein:  35 percent of peanut butter’s total weight is from protein, it contains 7 grams of protein in 2 tablespoons, which make it a great source of non-meat protein for vegetarians.
  • Good for Weight Loss: The high protein, fiber and healthy oils in peanuts butter make you feel fuller and more satisfied after eating, which help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of obesity.
  • Source of potassium: Peanut butter is rich in potassium that lowers the risk of high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease.

How to Make Your Own Peanut Butter

By making your own peanut butter you are controlling the amount of salt and sugar in it, which makes it much healthier than the peanut butter you buy from the store. (cheaper as well)

Here is how to make the traditional peanut butter at home.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups    unroasted peanuts
  • 1 pinch sea salt (optional)
  • 1 tsp      honey (optional)
  • 2 tbsps of peanut oil or olive oil (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F
  2. Spread the peanuts in a baking sheet.
  3. Roast the peanuts for 5 minutes, shake the pan then roast for another 5 minutes until the nuts are golden brown. (be careful they can burn quickly)
  4. Remove from the oven and let cool until you can handle them.
  5. Add the roasted peanuts to the food processor, process for 1 minute then scrapes sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed. Process again for 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Add the optional adding (oil, salt, honey) and process until you obtain a smooth liquid of peanut butter. 
  7. Transfer the peanut butter in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator.

Notes:

  • You can use roasted peanuts.
  • Pay attention the food processor may start to get warm, let it cool down then resume.
